Math and Science Staff

Coordinator

         

     

Vera joined TCC as the coordinator of the Learning Commons Math/Science area (formerly Math Learning Center) in 2002. She earned her AA from East Central College in Union, Missouri, her B. S. in Management from Southeast Missouri State University, and her Masters of Art in Mathematics from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Her previous experience included 12 years in the community college with pre-engineering students and in testing centers. She also worked with TRIO programs, targeting first generation, low income and disabled students. At Illinois State University, she focused on working with Supplemental Instruction and training. At all of these institutions she served as an adjunct, teaching math classes through Calculus III.

Words of advice: It’s important to make friends in your classes and build a support group.

Margelet Hamilton

     

Margelet was born and raised in the historic town of Savannah, Georgia.  In 1997, she received her Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Construction from the Savannah State University.  She relocated to Tallahassee, Florida to attend Florida State University (FSU) where she earned her Masters and Doctorate in Mathematics Education (1999 & 2011 resp.).  She joined the Learning Commons staff as the Assistant Coordinator for the Math/Science area Fall 2011.  Her previous experience includes 16 years of tutoring a variety of math topics at various colleges and universities.  This included the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (C.A.R.E.) program at FSU where she began as a tutor (4yrs) and advanced to Assistant Coordinator (3.5yrs).

 Words of Advice:  The only constant thing in life is change.

alia

     

Alia is a local native born in Tallahassee, and raised in Quincy, Florida.  She attended James A. Shanks High School, and Tallahassee Community College as a dual enrolled student.  Upon completion of her A.A. Degree in Spring 2004, Alia attended Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU), receiving a B.S. in Biology Pre-medicine.   Alia’s teaching career started at East Gadsden High School in 2007 as a Biology Instructor.  Alia continued with her studies at Hampton University, receiving her Masters of Science degree in Medical Science.  Alia loves to assist those in need, and is fascinated with anything to do with Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Microbiology. 

Words of Advice: Avoid procrastinating, study effectively, and ALWAYS seek assistance from someone when you need it!

         

     

Andrew was born in Waynesville, North Carolina and moved to Tallahassee in 1994. He attended James S. Rickards High School and graduated from Tallahassee Community College in the summer of 2006. Andrew studied for his B.A. at Florida State University where he earned his degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Physics in the summer of 2008. He joined the Math Center in January of 2004 and, according to Andrew, the best part is helping students with their math and science questions, especially chemistry.

Words of advice: Try to study some everyday and practice as much as you can.

Gregg has been part of the TCC family since 1993 when he joined the Academic Support Division and has served here as a part-time math tutor, adjunct instructor and Learning Commons Specialist. He earned his A. A. from St. Petersburg Junior College and his B. A. in Math Education from USF in Tampa. His previous experience includes 7 years at Lebanon High School (Tennessee) and 1 year at SAIL (Tallahassee) as a science and math teacher followed by 3 years with Sylvan Learning in Tallahassee as their math/science homework support tutor.

Words of advice: Plan your schedule carefully allowing time between classes to complete your homework. Love those around you, don’t stay long in a job that you hate, and floss, floss, floss.

 
         

      Roger is a Floridian from Miami, and after graduating from high school attended Florida A & M University. Upon graduating with a degree in Mathematics, he started a tutorial service from 1994 to 1998 to assist students at FAMU, FSU, TCC, and students attending the high schools in their math courses, and classes. His interests are collecting, studying books of personal finance & entrepreneurship, and science.

Andre’a was born and raised in Daytona Beach, FL. This is her first year at Tallahassee Community College. She is currently majoring in criminal justice. She graduated from East Bay High School class of 2010 in Gibsonton, FL. In her spare time she likes at listen to music and praise dance at church.
         

     
Bibi was born in Nigeria and moved to Florida in 2000. She earned her A.A. degree from Tallahassee Community College and is currently working on her B.S. degree in Accounting at Florida A&M University. She plans to further her education in the Business area after her graduation in the spring of 2010. In her free time she enjoys playing tennis, watching soccer, working out, reading, dancing, shopping, traveling and meeting different people.
         

Bidushi

     
Bidushi is a current sophomore TCC student. She came from Nepal to United States in 2010. She plans to pursue a degree in Finance. She loves travelling and helping others. She joined the Learning Commons team in 2012.

Bill is from Fort Pierce, Florida and moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University in 2005.  He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Management in 2009 and then entered the Computer Technology field as a Quality Assurance Tester.  He plans on obtaining a Masters degree in Computer Technology from University of West Florida in the near future.  In his free time he keeps himself busy with anything mechanical and loves to work on cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc. and he also loves computers/technology.

Brittany was born and raised in Michigan where she graduated high school in 2009. She has attended TCC since Fall 2009 and plans to transfer to Florida A&M University. There she plans to receive a bachelor degree in Social work with Biology as her minor. On her spare time she enjoys quality time with her friends, attending various activities at church, dancing, and reading.  Brittany says she grateful to have started her collegiate journey at TCC because here is where she developed a great educational foundation and would recommend anyone who has the will to attend.

Caitlin(Cat) was born and raised in Taylorville, Illinois.  She attended high school in Ogden, Utah and Melbourne, Florida, where she graduated.  She received her AA degree from TCC and is now currently attending FSU for Mechanical Engineering.  She likes machining, building robots, and doing origami whilst surfing (an amazing trick you've got to see to believe).

Christy recently moved to Tallahassee from Rockville, MD for her husband’s job.  She graduated long ago from Virginia Tech with degrees in engineering and education.  Following graduation, she worked as an engineer for Bridgestone/Firestone in Tennessee and South Carolina.  After relocating to DC area, she began teaching math in high school.

Danielle B graduated from SAIL high school in 2010. She enjoys spending her free time reading, sewing, painting, and various other arts and crafts. She also loves to cook, has been vegan/vegetarian on and off for the past five years, so she loves to cook with lots of veggies and grains. Her favorite thing to make at the moment is sweet potato tempura and spaghetti. Danielle plans to attend UF after TCC where she will get her BA in English, Art, and French. Then she will go on to get her Masters.

David, a native of Madison Florida, is a first generation sophomore at Tallahassee Community College. He is a member of TCC's Black Student Union and currently sits on the E-Board as Treasurer. He plans to transfer to FSU in the spring and would like to major in psychology with a concentration in clinical counseling and a minor in social psychology.

Denia is from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where she has been living all her life. She came to Tallahassee Community College in 2010 to start her studies for computer engineering and is planning to transfer to a university in Florida or Georgia when she is done with her prerequisites. From an early age she has liked getting involved in school activities and helping others. She feels that by being a math tutor she can help others and enjoy it.
         

Derek

     
Derek is from Okeechobee, FL. He is currently attending Florida State University in pursuit of his B.A. degree in biological science. The ability to help people attracted Derek to become a tutor at the Learning Commons.
         

     
Don retired from Department of Defense Dependents Schools serving on Okinawa and mainland Japan as teacher, counselor, and administrator. He has been an adjunct instructor for the University of Maryland, as well as FCC in Frederick, Maryland and also for Edison Community College in Punta Gorda, Florida. His graduate degrees include Counseling from University of Maryland, Adult Education, Educational Policy, and Ph.D. in International and Intercultural Developmental Education from FSU.

Donna is an international student who was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. She is currently and AA and AS student at TCC and plans to transfer to a four year college to earn her BSN in nursing. Donna enjoys learning and sharing her knowledge with others.

Everett has over 23 years of accounting and finance experience in the public and private sectors. He is an adjunct faculty member here at TCC teaching a variety of accounting and finance courses. Everett has approximately 15 years experience teaching at the college level. He holds an A.A. degree in Computer Science, B.S. degree in Business Administration and Accounting, and a Masters of Accounting degree. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Business Manager.

Fred

     
Fred is from Wildwood, Florida. He is currently a TCC student planning to transfer to FSU and will double major in mathematics and education. He loves football and currently coaches high school football. His number one hobby is watching movies and he has a great sense of humor.
         

Garrett

     
Garrett goes to school at TCC and is studying engineering. He likes to kayak, vacation, play chess or poker and stays active. He recommends managing time well, staying organized, and drinking coffee.
         

Greg

     
Greg was born and raised in Tallahassee. He’s a 2010 Lawton Chiles High School graduate, and has been attending TCC for 1 year now. He will be transferring to Florida State in the fall to complete his Mechanical Engineering degree. Greg tutors math.

Henry received his prestigious high school diploma from Lincoln High School and received his Associate of Arts degree, because he loves the arts, at Tallahassee Community College. Henry is currently attending Florida A&M University. Henry is a BEAST!!!
         

     
Hernán was born in Valparaiso, Chile as the youngest of three children and moved to Tallahassee, Florida, when he was 19 years old. He attended Tallahassee Community College on 2008 and 2009. He transferred to FSU where he obtained his B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Statistics. Hernán enjoys to read, to ride his bicycle, to watch movies, to dance, to play Assassin’s Creed (1, 2, 3 & 4) and Final Fantasy.  Being here at the Learning Commons makes him aware of the differences in learning styles and he is trying to adapt himself to each one of them for the sake of knowledge.
         

jeff

     
Jeff is originally from Denton, Texas, but grew up mostly in southeast GA moving several times until 5 because of being an army brat.  He is currently enrolled in TCC as a computer science major finishing up his AA to then transfer over to FSU and achieve his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He tutors most areas of mathematics from the basics of intermediate algebra all the way up to calculus.  In tutoring he strives to find real life applications for the problems he helps with to show students how math is not just a useless thing the schools make you learn, but is a part of their everyday life .  He tries to find out how  students look at things then takes that outlook and helps them see that math in is a logical progression of steps that build upon each other. He believes that math does not just have to be work - it can be fun as well.
         

Jeremiah

     
Jeremiah is a current sophomore at Tallahassee Community College. He is majoring  in business and marketing with a minor in communications.  His plan is to finish up his year at TCC and then transfer to Florida State University. He was born in Plant City, Florida, “Strawberry Capital of the World”, and lived there until he was 18. He’s a very family oriented person and during his free time likes to hang out with family and friends, perform poetry, write raps, and play video games. Anything else - feel free to ask him!
         

     
Jolly was born in India and came to America in 2002. She likes to work in the Commons because of her positive experiences receiving help everyday as a student.  Now she wants to help other students. Jolly’s majoring in medicine (surgical). She is doing medicine for her grandfather and that is also her dream. She speaks three Indian languages.
         

     
Jon currently attends Florida State University and majors in Applied Mathematics.  His hobbies are playing sports, learning new things about mathematics, and going to the movies.  In the Learning Commons, he tutors in all areas of mathematics and Physics I.  Jon’s goals are to be a professor at a university and conduct research in mathematics or a related field.

Kyle attends FSU in pursuit of a degree in Computer Science. He has always lived in Tallahassee. As far as interests go, he enjoys gaming and spending time with his friends.

Lawrence is known to students as Mr. B. He graduated from F.S.U. in August of 2010, with a master’s in math education. He likes to think of himself as cool, calm, and collected - let him know what you think. If you come to a fork in the road, pick it up, you might need it later in life. If there’s one thing he can ask of you, please don’t fear math, it can’t hurt you! Just put in the time and don’t forget to ask a lot of questions, you’ll be amazed at what you can learn!
         

Lydia

     
Lydia is a native resident of Tallahassee.  She earned her A.A. degree from TCC and is currently working on her bachelor degree in mathematics at FSU.  In her free time she cares for her reptilian companions and does more math problems.
         

Martha

     
Martha recently graduated from TCC. She is now a student at FSU finishing her BA/MA in History. She plans to teach at the college level. Presently, she’s a Math tutor in the Learning Commons. She has 4 grown children and a husband of 35 yrs.
         

     
Noah has lived in Tallahassee for the past 13 years and graduated from FSU with a degree in Math Education and a 2nd degree in Actuarial Science. He is currently a Math tutor in the Learning Commons at TCC and he is an Adjunct Math teacher in the College Prep Math division at TCC.
         

Polina

   
 
Polina graduated from High School of Mathematics in her home country Bulgaria in 2010. She has grown up in a family of engineers and doctors. Her father is Bulgarian while her mother was born in Russia and raised in Ukraine in a family of Jewish ancestors. This is why Polina loves math and speaks four languages.
Thankfully to her family, Polina traveled around Europe and saw how other people lived. She was fascinated by the beautiful places she visited and the interesting people she met, but it was a child dream of hers to visit the USA. She first came to the states in 2008 to visit a friend in Florida. Polina loved it there, so she decided to come to the US to study her higher education. Although she won scholarships in big universities, her family couldn’t afford it and she decided to start with a community college.
Because she loves helping other people she wants to seek a medical degree. One of Polina’s main goals in life is to graduate from a prestige University in the USA.

Robby is from Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from the Douglas Anderson School Of The Arts classical guitar program in 2010 and got his A.A. from TCC in summer ’11. He is currently a junior studying pure math at FSU. He tutors college algebra to calculus III/ODE. He loves math, science, and helping people understand the way the world works
         

rocky

   
 
Rocky was born in Ocala, Florida and recently moved to Tallahassee. Rocky served in the U.S. Air Force from 1994-1998. He attended Vanguard High School and graduated from the College of Central Florida with an A.A. in Physics in 2003. He later studied at the University of Florida and received his B.S. in Geology in 2006. For the next four years Rocky worked as a teacher and private tutor. First at a private high school for two years, then as an adjunct professor of mathematics at CCF for the last two years. He is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the online math program at University of West Florida with hopes of transferring to Florida State University in the fall to complete his degree. Rocky joined the Learning Commons team in 2011.

Ronnie is a former TCC student who now attends FSU. His major is chemistry and he plans to go to medical school one day. With his free time he plays drums and studies.
         

     
Ross is a local of Tallahassee. He is an Anatomy and Physiology tutor in the Learning Commons as well as a TCC student who is awaiting his acceptance into the Nursing program. After getting his R.N. certification, Ross plans on pursuing a degree in medicine.

Rudy is from Havana, Fl. , and is currently pursuing a career in Game Design . On his off-time he enjoys reading, playing various games, and watching anime or anything that has an interesting or unique plot. He also enjoys learning and discussing the different ways that people perceive the world around them, and hopes to someday create games that help people view the world in brand new, interesting ways.

Sarah is a native from Tallahassee, Florida. She graduated from one of our local high schools, The Academy of Academics & Technology in 2008. Her class was the last class to graduate from this high school before its closing. She has attended TCC for a year and a half now. Sarah’s major is criminal justice with a minor in psychology. She plans to attend Florida State University for her bachelor’s degree. She also plans to become a criminal defense attorney who later becomes a Supreme Court judge.
         

Sergey

     
Sergey was born and raised in Samarkand, Uzbekistan (Middle Asia). After the high school he went to Moscow, Russia to get his M.S and Ph.D. (Chemistry) from Moscow State University. In 2001, soon after he got his Ph.D. degree, he started postdoctoral work at FSU, trying to prepare the new generation of anti-cancer drugs. After several years at FSU he plans to find a job in biotech / pharma company that develops new drugs to fight serious diseases. In the meantime he likes to help students in the Learning Commons with Chemistry issues, and on his free time he likes hiking, watching/playing soccer, reading Sci-Fi novels (e.g. Robert Sheckley) and going to free concerts at FSU.

Stephen was born and raised in Miami, FL. Despite being a fan of the University of Miami Hurricanes his whole childhood, he decided to attend Florida State University, their rival school. He is currently a senior and graduates at the end of summer 2011. Starting fall 2011, he will be the President of the Accounting Society at FSU. He has already been accepted into FSU's Masters of Accountancy program where he will start in August. Stephen loves playing all types of sports, watching/attending comedy events and helping fellow students.

Vijay is from Bangalore, India and he moved to Tallahassee, FL to get his Master’s in Financial Mathematics.  While working on his M.S, he worked as a tutor at FSU’s Math Help Center for 2 years.  After graduating from FSU in May 2010, he started working at TCC as an Adjunct Faculty in the Science and Math Department.  He has been a part of the Learning Commons team since Spring 2011. His main areas of expertise are Algebra, Pre-calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus.  He plans on working towards his doctorate degree in mathematical finance in the near future.

Yu is from China. He tutors accounting and math in the Learning Commons. He likes to be a tutor and to share his ideas, not simply because he loves to deal with people, but also because he believes that helping others understand the materials is one of the best ways to learn. Thus, everybody can grow up together.
In the leisure time, he is pretty much a sports guy enjoying soccer and basketball.

Yeuran was born and raised from South Korea. She came to America in 2010. She is earning AA degree in TCC, and she is planning on transferring to FSU majoring biomathematics. When she was in high school, she loved to make a math group and discussed math problems with her friends. For her, helping students in learning common is a very rewarding job.
