Collection Management.
Faculty members are encouraged and expected to participate in the Library's collection management program by recommending instructional materials which will support their areas of specialization. In addition, they are responsible for suggesting materials to keep the collection current and up-to-date. To assist in developing the collection in the various subject areas, each librarian is assigned to an academic division as a liaison person. Every effort will be made to accommodate faculty requests that are within the scope of the Library's collection policy.
Priorities.
The primary function of the Library collection is to provide materials that support the curriculum. The Library provides some materials designed to support local and state information, curriculum development, and effective classroom technique. Materials supporting cultural and recreational interests are purchased in limited quantities depending on funds and interest.
Criteria.
- Material should be appropriate for community college use.
- Materials should be written or produced on a level that the average community college student can use or benefit from, or at a level that students in a particular field are expected to attain.
- The following should be used to evaluate all materials considered for acquisition and inclusion in the collection:
- relevance to instructional needs
- correlation to the existing collection
- appropriateness of the medium / compatibility with hardware already owned
- timeliness and permanence of contents
- quality of writing
- reputation of author, director, publisher, producer
- scarcity of materials on the subject
- age
- cost in relation to the costs of other relevant materials
- storage needs
- availability elsewhere
Ordering procedures.
Book order cards may be obtained from Division secretaries or the office of the Director of Library Services. Please provide as much information as possible on the cards - author, publisher, date, ISBN, edition, price, etc. When submitting requests for titles from a little-known publisher or association, or from a publisher's catalog, please send the catalog or brochure with the order cards. Give the completed cards to your division director for approval and submission to the Library.
LINCC
now indicates on its screens those titles that the Library has ordered, received, and processed and are available for use. Also, order cards will be returned to the requester once the title is available for use. For your browsing pleasure, selected new titles are placed on the shelves for new books in the lobby.
