Searching Tips
Although each database is designed and maintained by a different group of individuals, most databases utilize similar operations and procedures when searching. No one database is likely to use all the features listed.
BASIC or KEYWORD SEARCH:
anticipates you will enter the most specific descriptive words of your topic, and search for items that contain those words
ADVANCED or CUSTOMIZED SEARCH:
allows you to easily create a more detailed search using designated guidelines to combine subjects with dates, authors, titles, sources, keywords or other options depending on the specific database
NATURAL LANGUAGE SEARCH:
most databases do not correctly interpret natural questions; only a few do have that search option
ex: How can the United States stop terrorist attacks and insure home security?
AND, OR, NOT:
Boolean logic search terms can expand or limit your search results
AND:
limits search to results including ALL the terms listed
ex: colleges and students AND stress
ex: Florida AND voting and reform
OR:
expands search by covering all words of same meaning
ex: (teenagers OR adolescents or youth)
ex: (survey OR poll)
ex: (car or auto OR automobile)
NOT:
limits search to exclude undesirable information
ex: (water pollution) NOT (oceans OR seas)
ex: (children) not (infants or babies)
( ):
Parens use of (parenthesis) sets off distinct elements of complex search commands with mixed boolean operator terms
ex: (teenagers or adolescents) AND (anorexia or bulimia)
ex: college and students and (stress or anxiety)
ex: (adopt or adoption) and (cat# or kitten#)
PHRASE SEARCHING or EXACT PHRASE:
quotation marks " " may be used when you want to keep words together
ex: "battered women syndrome"
ex: "date rape drug"
PLURALS: + for s or es -
ex: fish+ will find both -fish? and -fishes?
TRUNCATION:
# will usually serve as a wildcard for one letter
ex: #ffect finds affect and effect - - wom#n finds -women? and -woman?
WILDCARDS:
an asterisk * will fill in for all possible letters after the root word
ex: comput* will find: computation computations computed computer computers computing computerization computerize, etc.
Many databases provide Tutorials or Help Features to illustrate the specific features of the database program. While basic searching is the same for all databases, each program has its own special features, shortcuts, navigation commands and other rules that will effect the success of your search. Read the screen options carefully! You might find one that dramatically simplifies your search and yields better results!
