About the Division

Welcome to the Division of Science and Mathematics

Our division is a service division that offers a variety of science and mathematics courses designed to meet the needs of students in the general Associate of Arts transfer degree, as well as those enrolled in various Associate of Science programs.

In the area of science, we offer general education courses as well as those for students majoring in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, the earth sciences and physics. In mathematics, we offer three general tracks starting at the intermediate algebra level. The three tracks include:

  1. Courses for science, engineering and math majors, which include calculus I, II and III, as well as differential equations;
  2. Courses for business and marketing majors, including statistics and business calculus and
  3. Courses for other majors including math for liberal arts I and II.

The division is comprised of 44 full-time and 79 adjunct faculty members, all of whom strive to create a classroom environment that provides a variety of learning opportunities to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Many of our faculty members are involved in professional organizations and attend workshops, conferences and meetings to keep current in their fields. This professional, knowledgeable, and student-oriented faculty, in conjunction with excellent facilities, including modern science and computer laboratories that incorporate state-of-the-art technologies, create an environment that enhances learning and student success in both science and mathematics courses.

The departments are led by Dr. Moana Karsteter (Mathematics Program Chair) and Ms. Carol Zimmerman (Science Program Chair).

In addition to standard classroom courses, the division offers a number of courses using non-traditional formats such as web-based and televised courses and self-paced instruction (SPI). The division also houses several student-oriented programs. The Florida Georgia-Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Program (FG-LSAMP) offers a variety of opportunities and scholarships for students entering the areas of science and mathematics. Meanwhile, the HP-MESA Center is a gathering place for students taking a variety of courses in these areas.

The division office is located in Room 251 of the Science and Mathematics Building. Our staff includes: Neisa Logman, Assistant to the Dean; Lisa Sampson, Staff Assistant I; Lucinda Sellers-Jarosz, Office Manager; and Alan Stuart-Tilley, Science Lab Manager.

If we can be of assistance, please stop by or call (850) 201-8499.

Sincerely,
Franklin B. Brown, Ph. D.
