TCC women fall on the road at Gulf Coast State
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (February 18, 2012) - FCSAA No. 2 Gulf Coast State College clinched a berth in the NJCAA Region VIII/FCSAA Tournament with a 57-37 win over No. 9 Tallahassee Community College on Saturday evening in women's basketball action.
With the win, Gulf Coast State (21-4) improved to 8-3 in Panhandle Conference play and moved into a first-place tie with Pensacola State College, who lost to Northwest Florida State College, also on Saturday. Tallahassee (11-13, 0-10), meanwhile, dropped its tenth straight game.
Gulf Coast State led from start to finish, jumping out to a 10-4 lead at the 14:23 mark of the first half. Over the next ten minutes, Gulf Coast State's lead grew to 31-14.
The Lady Commodores hit 16-of-39 field goal attempts in the first half while limiting Tallahassee to just under 25.0 percent (8-of-31) shooting. The end result was a 35-17 halftime lead for Gulf Coast State.
Gulf Coast State outscored Tallahassee 11-7 over the first six minutes of the second half to effectively put the game away.
Shanequa Phifer led Tallahassee with 11 points, the only Lady Eagle in double-figures.
Uju Ugoka paced Gulf Coast State with 12 points.
Tallahassee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Northwest Florida State College for a 6:30 p.m. eastern tilt against the Lady Raiders.
