Adjunct Faculty Advancement Program (AFAP)

Purpose:  To engage and reward adjunct faculty for service to the College and commitment to student learning and professional growth.

Goals:

  • To integrate adjunct faculty into the TCC educational community
  • To promote the professional growth of adjunct faculty
  • To develop institutional practices that foster a commitment to student learning
  • To impact student learning outcomes through improved teaching

Enabling Activities:

  • Project and support a learning centered teaching philosophy
  • Provide assistance in designing professional growth plans
  • Provide opportunities for adjunct faculty to develop professional relationships with full-time faculty
  • Provide assistance with instructional design, integrating technology, active learning, student engagement strategies, assessment, and classroom management
  • Provide a tier of financial rewards to adjunct faculty who develop, implement, evaluate and revise professional growth plans

Eligibility:

Adjuncts who have completed ATLAS are added to a list that is shared with the deans who extend invitations to apply to the Adjunct Faculty Advancement Program.

In addition to completing ATLAS, invited applicants must:

  • Have taught at least twelve credit hours
  • Complete the application
  • Submit portfolio pieces created in ATLAS. This includes:
    • a teaching philosophy statement
    • a sample unit of learning outcomes
    • a reflection on the use of a classroom assessment technique
    • a sample assessment tool tied to learning outcomes
    • a reflection on the integration of technology
    • an annotated syllabus
  • Develop and include a mini-professional growth plan
  • Present a 10 minute interactive teaching demo to a panel of deans

Format:

This program is designed to provide adjunct faculty members with the time and opportunity to enhance teaching and learning. Participants in the program will:

  • Attend one meeting at the beginning of the semester to discuss the details of the program
  • Meet with their assigned mentor
  • Invite the mentor to class to complete the observation
  • Meet with the mentor to compare observation forms
  • Work on mini-professional growth plan to improve teaching and learning
  • Complete results and assessment form
  • Submit mentor’s observation form, self completed observation form, and results and assessment by deadline
  • Attend Induction Ceremony
