GEAR UP

FL GEAR UP Logo

Florida was awarded the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Grant in 2008. Florida’s GEAR UP program is designed to provide early intervention for prioritized students in targeted schools that will set, align, and apply rigorous and relevant academic standards to increase student rates of learning, completion, postsecondary enrollment, and will align with employer needs.

What Is GEAR UP?

GEAR UP is a six-year discretionary grant that supports early college awareness and preparation activities for low-income students in grades seven through 12. It is specifically designed to help middle and high school students handle more rigorous and advanced coursework to better prepare them for college. The grant also includes a large parent and student awareness component that explains the college experience and clarifies college academic and financial requirements.

The GEAR UP Program includes strong parent involvement, student/parent awareness, dedicated guidance at the school level and state financial assistance to complete secondary and postsecondary education.

The primary goal of GEAR UP is to ensure all students in Florida are prepared to succeed in postsecondary education. The GEAR UP program is built on three broad college access components:

  • Student Achievement
  • Student Attainment
  • Parental Involvement
