Music Programs
Tallahassee Civic Chorale
Established in 1986, the Tallahassee Civic Chorale is a nonprofit, non-audition community chorus consisting of 50 to 60 singers, organized in traditional choral fashion under the direction of Jo-Ann van der Vat-Chromy. The Chorale is open to anyone in the Big Bend community including students at Tallahassee Community College. TCC students may also take the Civic Chorale for college credit. In addition, the Civic Chorale sponsors a music scholarship for TCC students.
The Chorale performs three major concerts annually. Musical selections range from classical composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart to modern composers such as Copeland, Vaughn Williams, Andrew Lloyd Weber and local notables such as Dr. Andre' Thomas. All concerts are open to the public, free of charge.
We share our love of singing with the community through performances at local events such as the Winter Festival. We also perform at nursing homes, retirement centers and other settings for those who are unable to attend cultural arts performances.

Capital City Band of TCC
Founded in 1924, the Capital City Band has been associated with Tallahassee Community College for over twenty years. Made up largely of community members, this non-audition group is available for college credit as it is part of the curriculum offered at TCC as well as being open to any non-student community member over the age of 18.
Although this is a non-audition group, it is a performing group which regularly performs throughout the year in and around the community, performing each year at Springtime Tallahassee, the Winter Festival - Celebration of Lights in Tallahassee, and the Fourth of July Celebration at Westminster Oaks Community. This group also performs regularly on the TCC campus. All of this performing of course requires that any person wishing to join, must be able to read music and play his or her instrument with an adequate level of proficiency in order to play and perform the music in our library. We invite all who meet this requirement to come join us. For more information contact Gary Coates, Band Director, at 576-6336 or 201-8361.
TCC Jazz Band
The Tallahassee Community College Jazz Band is a non-audition music class that offers musicians an outlet to learn and perform a wide variety of stage band music. From traditional Big Band music from the 30s and 40s, to more modern stage band arrangements of blues, swing, rock & pop music, this band teaches many styles of playing.
For the past four years, the TCC Jazz Band has performed concerts at Turner Auditorium at the end of each Fall and Spring semester. The band has also performed in and around the community for such events as the Quincyfest in Quincy, the Fallschase Balloon Rally in Tallahassee, Old Time Havana Days and for special groups such as "The Friends of the Library," the "American Cancer Society" and the "TCC Alumni Association."
The band is open to all TCC students and can be taken for credit up to four times and may be applied toward your graduation requirements as an elective. Graduating high school seniors may also take this class for college credit.
Local community musicians make up the core of the band and anyone wishing to join as a community member can do so without signing up for the course. All you need is an instrument, the ability to read music, and a desire to have fun with music.
The band meets in the CH165 at TCC every Wednesday evening. The room is available from 7 p.m. with the downbeat at 7:30 p.m. and rehearsal until 9:30 p.m.
For more information contact Gary Coates, Band Director, at 576-6336 or 201-8361.
Big Bend Community Orchestra
TCC is also home to the Big Bend Community Orchestra. The Big Bend Community Orchestra was formed in February of 1994 by Waldie Anderson and Ginny Densmore to provide a venue for community musicians in the area to play symphonic music in an enjoyable atmosphere, and to promote music education and participation. The Orchestra consists of community members and TCC students. To date, the Orchestra has presented 61 concerts and over 245 different compositions by a wide variety of composers spanning four centuries. Each year, the Big Bend Community Orchestra showcases student musicians in a competition called "The Young Artist Competition." In this competition, students prepare a selection to be played for three experienced orchestral conductors. Three first place winners are then invited to play with the Big Bend Community Orchestra.
Under the Direction of Dr. Shelby Chipman, the Big Bend Community Orchestra practices on Thursday nights in the TCC Band Room. TCC students are encouraged to participate. For more information, please visit www.BBCOrch.org or contact the artist series office at (850) 224-9934.
