Green Guide Girls Program

Offered at The Wakulla Center during the 2008-09 school year, the Green Guide Girls Program is an extension of the already successful Green Guide Certification Program. The Green Guide Girls Program targets young women between the ages of 14 and 18.

Participants will receive hands-on environmental training through ten free Saturday workshops, all outdoors. Workshops are for the student and one or both parents. The workshops will involve the students in field trips and classroom learning at The Wakulla Center and will be designed to bring them into the field, expose them to scientific methods and investigation and provide them with the knowledge and tools needed to further develop their interest in science and their will to preserve the natural environment.

A Motorola volunteer will provide guest lectures on career opportunities in science and technology. The stipend from Motorola will enable The Wakulla Center to cover instructional and tour guide costs, as well as educational materials and supplies for approximately 20 girls. This Motorola-sponsored program can also serve as a youth-focused prototype for Florida’s “Serve to Preserve” program, a new initiative to foster volunteerism in environmental protection.

Field trips and presentations will begin in October and November 2008 and continue in February and March 2009.
