Collection Development

The primary collection development goal of the Tallahassee State College library is to provide and maintain collections in various formats that support the curriculum and instructional programs of the College, a two-year lower-division institution. A secondary priority is to provide resources that support and enrich personal and professional growth and promote the development of an engaged and informed citizenry. This policy outlines the standards and guidelines for selecting and maintaining the Library’s collection, serves as a consistent framework for those responsible for collection development, and communicates library policy to students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Guidelines for Children in the Library

The Tallahassee State College Library strives to provide a learning environment conducive to study for students, faculty, staff, and community members. We ask that you adhere to the following guidelines to make the library a welcoming space for all.

  • Children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or adult caretaker.
  • Staff will attempt to locate the child’s caretaker if a child is unattended. If the caretaker cannot be found, TSCPD will be notified.
  • If a child becomes upset and cannot quiet down when asked, we ask the caretaker to remove the child from the library to calm them temporarily.
  • Snacks and beverages with tight-fitting lids are permitted in the library. Please finish all food that carries a strong odor or is messy to eat before entering the library building.
  • Currently, enrolled students can check out physical items with a TSC ID.
  • Anyone may enter the library and read books on the shelves. Caretakers are responsible for what children read while in their care.
  • When finished with library books, please leave them on the book carts at the end of the aisle.
  • Caretakers will be held liable for any damaged library property by children in their care.
  • Due to unfiltered internet access, accompanied children may not use TSC desktop or laptop computers.

Services for the General Public

Current students and staff of any Florida public college or university can use selected resources at any other Florida college library through our statewide reciprocal borrowing agreement. Students must show their current school ID card and be in good standing at their home institution to utilize these services. At TSC, these privileges include checking out books, selecting other physical materials, and using the library facility for studying. Reference materials and serials may be used in-house but not checked out.

Open Wi-Fi access is available on both floors of the library.
