Steps to Apply

The Florida Public Safety Institute offers training to become a firefighter, among other public safety careers. The following will help guide new students through the admissions process.

Apply for Admission

  1. Apply for admission to TCC using our online application
  2. After you submit you will receive a confirmation page with your TCC Identification number, email address and password. Keep this page for your records as you will need this information to log in to TCC Passport and access your TCC email.
  3. If you were not able to upload your residency documents at the time of application, please remember to provide copies of the residency documents (e.g., driver’s license, vehicle registration, voter’s registration card) that reflect an issue date of at least one year prior to the first day of class for the semester you plan to attend to the Office of Admissions and Records. 

Take the TABE Test

All enrolled students who have not successfully completed college English and Math must take and pass the TABE Full Battery Level (A) with a score of 10th grade level or higher in all categories.

TABE Test | Cost: $25

Applicants MUST register and pay for the exam prior to the date of the test.

Contact Workforce Development at (850) 201-8760 to schedule an appointment to take the TABE test.

Submit a Recruit Application​

Download the Recruit Application and complete the enclosed checklist. Be sure to include all listed needed documents or your application will not be processed. The seven year driving history can be picked up at DHSMV.

Return the completed application, along with non-refundable check or money order payable to Tallahassee Community College for $50.00, to the Fire Academy Office located at:

After Submitting an Application

Do not obtain a medical examination until you have been given a conditional accepted into the academy. Conditional acceptance will be determined on the date of the individual interview. The interviews will be conducted approximately 30 days prior to the beginning of class.
