TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 15, 2012) - Tallahassee Community College’s student newspaper, The Talon, and student literary magazine, The Eyrie, ranked among the best in the Florida College System at last month’s Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) annual awards ceremony.
The Talon received awards in 16 of 20 categories, including three first-place awards – In-depth Reporting, News Reporting and General Column – and third place in the state for print publications. Three Talon students – Tara Santos, Jeremiah Hallback, III, and Claudymir Baptiste – became members of FCSPA’s Inner Circle of Excellence, reserved for students who receive awards in three or more categories.
The Eyrie also made its mark with awards in seven categories, including a first-place award in both Editing and Contents Page Design, and second place in literary magazine publication General Excellence and Cover Page design. In addition, four students from The Eyrie received awards for their creative work in photography and nonfiction – Ephram Johnson, Yodalis Fuentes, Holly Foss and Lillie Fuentes.
TCC sponsors attendance each year to the FCSPA conference for both newspaper and magazine production students.
“The Talon and The Eyrie have a long-standing reputation of excellence in the state,” said Dr. Marge Banocy-Payne, dean of TCC’s Division of Communications and Humanities. “Additionally, both publications afford students an opportunity to work collaboratively to achieve a common goal.”
Entries from 34 of Florida’s college publications were eligible for FCSPA’s 2012 contest and were judged by award-winning professionals in the field.
This year, the FCSPA offered a variety of workshops addressing print, online and literary magazine publication. The three-day conference also conducted an on-site photography contest and movie review contest for students who attended.
