TCC Adult Education wins best practice awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 27, 2012) – TCC Adult Education was honored during a luncheon ceremony this month by the Florida Career Pathways Network (FCPN) at its 2012 Symposium in Jupiter, Florida.
Harriett Abrams, Adult Education program coordinator, won a best practice award for her proposal and presentation of the “Gadsden YouthBuild Project (GYB):  Tallahassee Community Colleges’ best practice for building Partnerships, Career Pathways, Student Completers and Houses.”
The GYB Project provides disadvantaged youth between the ages of 16 and 24 with the opportunity to gain essential academic, occupational and leadership skills.  The students are in an adult education class half of the day and are building a house in Midway, Florida the other half of the day.
Ms. Abrams stated, “We are in our second year of the program.  Our instructors and students continue to impress me as they facilitate contextualized instruction, which results in active student learning and increased educational gains.  I’m so proud of them.”  Ms. Abrams, who is a FCPN regional vice president, was also selected as the FCPN Adult Education Career Pathways consultant.
Johnny Craig, career pathways specialist, won a best practice award for his proposal and presentation of “Tallahassee Community College’s Pre-GED/Career Planning (SLS 1301) Articulation Agreement.”  Mr. Craig, who also serves as a SLS 1301 adjunct faculty member, combined the two curriculums.
According to Mr. Craig, “I then partnered with TCC Academic Support program to establish a career planning articulation agreement, which allows Pre-GED students to receive 1 college credit for the completion of the SLS 1301 Career Planning portfolio.  This motivates students to press beyond the GED into postsecondary or certificate programs.”

FCPN is Florida’s leading career pathways organization and serves as a network where members share and discover best practices for secondary, postsecondary, adult education and military career pathways. The FCPN Annual Symposium provides outstanding professional development in Best Practices presented by Florida’s leading career pathways practitioners.
