Representative Southerland visits TCC’s Florida Public Safety Institute

MIDWAY, Fla. (May 14, 2013) – Recently, Representative Steve Southerland visited Tallahassee  Community College’s Florida Public Safety Institute to talk with dual enrollment students. Representative Southerland shared a message of encouragement—urging the students to connect with a vision for the future and to understand that education is an investment in themselves.
The Gadsden County School system students Representative Southerland addressed are participating in a dual enrollment program that allows them to take TCC courses for credit or attend TCC’s Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy while still in high school. Earlier in the year, students from the program had an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. and meet with Representative Southerland at his Capitol office.
“We were thrilled to welcome Representative Southerland into our classroom and for our students to have the opportunity to hear him speak,” said Robert Mixson. “Programs like these would not be possible without his support. We’re very proud of this program and the students that accept its challenges—and it’s great that Representative Southerland had a chance to see it firsthand.”
“The class of 14 students we have enrolled now are the most inquisitive, disciplined and motivated class we have had. I’m very grateful to Representative Southerland for making time to come talk with them,” said Andrea Blalock, FPSI’s Corrections Coordinator. “The Corrections Officer dual enrollment program is life-changing for students that participate. We give students hands-on experience and thoroughly prepare them for entry level positions in corrections. After successfully completing this program, students can be catapulted into middleclass economic status at the age of nineteen. I expect great things from this group.”
The dual enrollment program at FPSI has provided training to over 100 dual-enrolled high school students in corrections, security, or public safety telecommunications. For more information about these programs, contact the Florida Public Safety Institute at (850) 201-7000.
