TCC named “Top Military-Friendly College”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (January 14, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College has been named a Top Military-Friendly College in the 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities, which appears in the journal Military Advanced Education.

The guide provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform.

Among the attributes considered in evaluating institutions for inclusion in the guide are the flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits, on-campus ROTC, Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus assistance, support provided to families of service members, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, presence on military installations, and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.

“Our staff used strict criteria to evaluate the submissions of the respondents, and we had a record number of schools participating this year. We believe the guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising service members about their educational opportunities,” said Kelly Fodel, MAE’s editor.

The guide was recently released in print and is also available online at www.mae-kmi.com. Online users have access to a searchable database that includes survey questions and answers provided by responding institutions, along with explanations about critical issues such as the schools’ activation and deployment policies, withdrawal policies, and scholarship and financial aid availability.

TCC has recently ramped up its services for military veterans, opening a new veterans center and partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs to bring a VetSuccess on-campus VA counselor on board.

“From tutoring to career counseling to mental health services, our goal is to support student veterans and facilitate their successful transition to college,” said Delorise Robinson, TCC’s veterans affairs coordinator.
