TCC eligible to compete for prestigious Aspen prize

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 3, 2014) – Fifteen Florida College System institutions are eligible to compete for the prestigious Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, including Tallahassee Community College. The Aspen Institute today identified the top 150 community colleges in the nation based on exceptional levels of student success.

The $1 million Aspen Prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes. TCC competed for the inaugural prize in 2011.

“It is an honor to be part of such an elite group,” noted TCC President Jim Murdaugh. “Even more important, however, is that this process gives us another chance to look at our data, reflect on what we are doing, and learn from other outstanding community colleges. We are accountable for students’ ability to use what they have learned at our college. We seek to constantly improve our programs, and the only way to do that is by measuring our impact on student success.”

The Aspen Institute reviews publicly available data to determine which community colleges demonstrate student success in three areas: student persistence, completion and transfer; gains in outcomes over time; and equity in outcomes for underserved students.

The 15 Florida colleges eligible for the 2015 prize are:

  • Broward College
  • Chipola Colleg
