Eight straight: TCC Forensics victorious again at state championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 27, 2014) – For the eighth consecutive year, Tallahassee Community College’s Speech and Debate Team has won the Florida College System Activities Association State Championship. In addition to the state title, team members won 8 of 12 individual championships and garnered 31 total awards.

George Ramirez placed first in Pentathlon, a category reserved for students competing in five or more individual events, and brought home state titles in Prose Interpretation, After Dinner Speaking, Program Oral Interpretation and Duo Interpretation (with Matt Thompson).

“Forensics has been a life-changing activity for me,” said Ramirez. “It’s great to be able to travel all over the country and perform in a competitive atmosphere.”

Ramirez also won the Jennifer Pickman Novice Award for the state’s best novice competitor. Team TCC has captured the Pickman Award annually since its inception 15 years ago.

Thompson placed second in Pentathlon and won three state titles of his own in Poetry Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation and Duo Interpretation (with Ramirez).

Gerald Djajaputra finished third in Pentathlon and won the state championship in Persuasive Speaking.

Sarah Baker and Daniel Santillana rounded out Team TCC’s second-consecutive sweep of all five Pentathlon awards, placing fourth and fifth respectively. Santillana also won the state championship in Communication Analysis.

Other team members who brought home awards included Shelby Drummond, Alex Fabrega, West Funcheon, Diamond Paige and Ryan Terrell. Notably, Drummond, Fabrega, Paige and Terrell were all competing in their first-ever collegiate speech and debate tournament.

The state championship tournament was held in February at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Next up for Team TCC is the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament, which will take place in Denver on April 7-12. The event will feature the strongest community college teams from around the nation.
