TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 9, 2014) – A group of distinguished medical scholars from the People’s Republic of China will visit Tallahassee in the coming week thanks to a program facilitated by Tallahassee Community College.
Five members of the Chinese Alliance of Geriatric Hospitals will arrive on Sunday, May 11, to participate in a rigorous four-day program on healthcare for senior citizens. The program will take the scholars to area destinations, from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to Capital Regional Medical Center to TCC’s own Ghazvini Center for Healthcare Education. At each location, they will meet with and hear lectures from area professionals in the elder care field.
“They will have a pretty full agenda, but one that will give them a chance to learn and examine the healthcare system for the elderly and healthcare education in the United States,” said Betty Jensen, TCC’s international services coordinator.
The visiting scholars include Hongsong Xiao, president of Chengdu Geriatric Hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province; Jingyue Xu, director of nursing at Beijing University; Aili Fu, director of Tangshan Workers Hospital in Tangshan, Hebei Province; Henghua Wang, president of Yunnan Kunming Biji Geriatric Hospital in Kunming, Yunnan Province; and Yan-Mei Ou, government officer of development and reform in Wuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The Chinese scholars are able to attend the TCC program because the College was approved in 2013 by the U.S. Department of State for an additional, broader visa designation. The J visa designation allows TCC to host international professors, research scholars, short-term scholars and others—all in addition to the traditional degree-seeking students that could already enroll through the F visa held by most colleges, including TCC.
At the end of the four-day program, the scholars will receive certificates of completion at TCC. They will then depart for a visit to The Villages retirement community in Central Florida
