TCC surgical technology program achieves accreditation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 29, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College’s surgical technology program received full national accreditation Friday, May 16, from the governing board of surgical technology.

The designation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs makes TCC’s one of only a few accredited surgical technology programs in Florida that grants an Associate of Science degree.

“It’s a huge accomplishment. It’s definitely been a group effort,” said program chair Shannon Smith. “The administration, Dean Alice Nied and everyone in the Division of Healthcare Professions have been very supportive throughout this whole process.”

In less than two years at the College, Smith has built a list of achievements ranging from creating a curriculum and equipping a state-of-the-art lab to writing a self-study and graduating her first class of students. The program, which offers 19 classes, admits 12 students each Fall and Spring semester.

In addition to the surgical technology program, Smith aims to create a program at the College for central sterile processing to open in Fall 2014, as well as an endoscopy technician program for Spring 2015. The Tallahassee medical community has expressed great enthusiasm for both new programs.
