TCC GEAR UP hosts Summer Institute

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 4, 2014) – From June 9 to 13, 2014, more than 75 students in the TCC GEAR UP Program from Leon and Jefferson counties will participate in the TCC Summer Institute.

The students will enjoy a week of academic enrichment in areas such as financial literacy, college success, creative writing and computer technology. They will also be able to choose one of the following strands for cultural enrichment: leadership development, graphic arts, dance or drama.

“This is always an exciting way to start the summer activities for our students. The unique curriculum gives students exposure to diverse subject areas similar to what they will be offered in college,” said Louis Dilbert, assistant state project manager for Florida GEAR UP.

Activities are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Following this week of educational stimulation, juniors and seniors at Rickards High School, FAMU Developmental Research School and Jefferson Middle/High School will have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Leadership Institute, which will be held at TCC June 18–20.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a grant program of the U.S. Department of Education that supports early college awareness and preparation activities for low-income students in grades seven through 12.

Several Florida GEAR UP schools will also host their own summer programs:

Bronson Middle/High: June 10–26
