General and Operations Manager

General and operations managers plan, direct, and coordinate the operations of public or private sector organizations. The duties and responsibilities of operations managers include formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources. They often oversee actives directly related to the making of products or providing of services. Operations managers also review financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and program improvement.

Operations managers may work in a variety of environments because they oversee operations that are too diverse and general to be classified into one area of management or administration.

Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of general and operations managers is expected to grow between 3 and 9 percent between 2010 and 2020, slower than the average for all occupations.
