Corrections Basic Recruit Certificate (5005)
To be considered for such a position in a state prison or county jail, employees must first receive Basic Recruit certification as required by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
Through TCC's Correctional Officer Certification Program, students can meet the minimum standards for employment as a correctional officer in a Florida-based facility operated by either a public or private employer.
This program focuses on legal aspects, courts systems, weapons, interpersonal communication skills, correctional operations, emergency preparedness, defensive tactics, first responder, and the state officer's certification examination review. Additionally, this program contains practical skills and field exercises including courtroom demeanor and testifying, report writing, collection and preservation of evidence, drug identification, radio communications, patrol techniques, firearms training, fingerprinting, chemical agent exposure and first aid training.
After successful completion of the program, students will earn 28 hours towards an A.S. degree. This program is offered full-time for 12 weeks, or part-time (evening courses) for 24 weeks.
