Medical Coding and Billing Specialist Certificate (6352)

Courses in this certificate allow students to gain exposure to, and experience in, industry-standard coding systems, and provide students with the opportunity to engage with these systems from both hands-on and theoretical perspectives. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the healthcare delivery system, health information management and health information systems. This certificate focuses on all of the concepts recommended by the American Health Information Management Association. Students will be proficient in human anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Students leave this certificate program with advanced health code knowledge, including the ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding systems. This program offers courses in both a lecture and hands-on lab setting. Students can complete this certificate in two full-time academic years.

Program Purpose:
To prepare students for employment in a variety of healthcare settings as entry-level coders, medical record coders, coding technicians, coding clerks or medical coder/billers.

Program Length:
34 credit hours

Admission Requirements:

  • Standard high school diploma or GED diploma
  • Meet the required minimum scores on the Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, SAT or ACT (or complete the necessary developmental courses)
  • Satisfactory completion of program course prerequisites

Important Information for Distance Learners

Students who have not taken an online class at TCC before will need to successfully complete CDL-STU008, Introduction to Distance Learning, before registering for web-based courses. Introduction to Distance Learning is a free, non-credit online workshop that will help distance learning students succeed right from the start.

First time at TCC students who will complete their program of study entirely online should register for CDL-STU007, Distance Learning Online Orientation, before registering for web-based courses.  Distance Learning Online Orientation is a free, non-credit online orientation that meets both the orientation and distance learning workshop requirement and is for first time-at TCC students only.
