The Associate in Arts degree (A.A.) is designed for students who plan to transfer to a Florida public four-year institution as a junior to complete a bachelor’s degree program. The A.A. degree provides the courses of study equivalent to those offered in the freshman and sophomore years at Florida’s state colleges and universities. The A.A. degree requirements consist of 36 credit hours of general education and 24 credit hours of electives. Each student should choose elective courses that are required for admission to the student’s intended program of study/major at the desired college or university.

General Education Requirements for Associate in Arts Degree (36 Credit Hours)

1. Communications–6 semester hours


A. College Composition


B. Three hours minimum selected from the following:

To satisfy the requirement of State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030, students must complete six hours in Communications with a grade of “C” or better and produce multiple writing assignments in each of the courses.

2. Humanities–6 semester hours


Prerequisite: completion of the six-hour General Education Communications requirement.

C. Six hours minimum selected from two of the following categories:

Students must produce multiple writing assignments and earn a grade of C or better in Humanities general education course used to satisfy the writing requirement of State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030.

3. Mathematics–6 semester hours


Students may choose two of the following four courses:

Students may use any two of the following for general education math credit, provided they have earned C or better in the appropriate prerequisite courses or have an appropriate score on the College Level Math (CLM) placement test:

4. Sciences-6 semester hours


Distribution requirement: Six hours minimum selected from two of the following categories:

Note: Students pursuing a preprofessional program of study may be considered for a waiver of the general education science distribution requirement under the following condition: The academic prerequisites for the student’s intended transfer institution require only natural science courses within the same discipline (e.g., CHM1045  and PHY2048 ). To determine his or her eligibility for this waiver, the student should contact an academic advisor. Once an advisor has verified the student’s eligibility, the student should contact the Division of Natural Sciences.

5. History and Social Science–12 semester hours


Category A (History)


A minimum of six hours selected from one of the following sequences:

Students must produce multiple writing assignments and earn a grade of C or better in any Social Science general education course used to satisfy the writing requirement of State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030.

Category C (Personal Development)


A minimum of three hours selected from the following:

Additional Requirements for Associate in Arts Degree


A. Electives–24 semester hours


In addition to the general education requirements listed above (36 semester hours), students must complete 24 semester hours of elective coursework appropriate to the A.A. degree. A total of 60 credit hours is required for the A.A. degree.

A maximum of two semester hours of credit in physical education activity courses, including dance courses, may be allowed toward the 60 semester hours required for graduation. This limitation does not include non-activity courses. A total of four semester hours of credit in music organization and music activity courses may be allowed.

Other courses that do not provide credit toward the A.A. degree include a statement to that effect in their course description. Course descriptions may be viewed in the Course Information section of this catalog.

B. Instruction in the U.S. Constitution


This requirement may be fulfilled by successfully completing any one of  the following courses:

C. Foreign language requirements


Effective Fall 2014, two credits in one foreign language at the secondary level or the equivalent at the postsecondary or college level is required for new and readmission students seeking A.A. degrees.

  • Students who have successfully earned two credits in one foreign language at the secondary or high school level have met this A.A. degree requirement.
  • Students who have not successfully earned two credits in one foreign language at the secondary or high school level must satisfy this requirement by taking two semesters of one foreign language at the college level or demonstrating competence at the Elementary 2 Level in one foreign language at the postsecondary level.
  • Students who have not met this requirement at either the high school level or the college level will not be eligible for graduation with an A.A. degree.
  • Students transferring to upper division institutions may need to complete additional foreign language credits for their major. Students should check the foreign language requirements of their major at the institution they wish to attend. Students may be able to complete the foreign language requirements of their intended major while attending TCC.

Students who are uncertain whether they should begin in Elementary 1 Level or Elementary 2 Level of a foreign language or who wish to take only the intermediate level of a language should contact the Division of Communications and Humanities at (850) 201-6070 for information on taking a readiness assessment to determine the appropriate level of study.

TCC may award credit through the following accelerated methods: Advanced Placement (AP), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Excelsior College Examinations. Information may be found at Credit by Exam on the TCC Web site. 

D. Competency in the use of computers


This requirement may be satisfied through one of the following options:

  • Satisfactory completion of a high school or vocational computer course
  • Satisfactory completion of an approved college computer course
  • Satisfactory completion of a TCC course that includes computer-related skills
  • Satisfactory completion of an exemption or proficiency examination
