Crash Scene Mapping with Speed Lasers 

This course will teach the student how to map a crash scene with maximum efficiency. The student will learn the geometric concepts of points, lines, and curves. The nomenclature of the mapping equipment along with the proper set up and leveling will be covered. This class has an intensive hands-on element and students will actually map numerous scenes under instructor guidance. 

Course topics include:

  • Overview mapping systems
  • Introduction to coordinate geometry
  • The LTI laser mapping system
  • Methods of measuring
  • Relocating the system
  • Measuring in 3 dimensions
  • Mapping data and the download process

​None. Students must be active sworn law enforcement officers whose duties include crash investigation, or civilian employees of Florida law enforcement agencies who are crash investigators or crash investigation support personnel.

 What Should I Bring?

​Students will be learning the Laser Technology Map Star System. It is recommended that at least one system per every three students for an agency is brought with them to class. Additional spare systems will be very limited. If you would like to bring your own laptop computer, you are welcome to do so.

 What are the Expenses?

​Tuition for this training is provided through a grant, so there is no cost to you or your agency. Lodging and meals are only provided for training held at the Florida Public Safety Institute for students residing more than 50 miles from FPSI.  Lodging and meals are not provided for training held regionally.
