Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Investigation 

This course will teach the student the dynamics of a motor vehicle impact with a pedestrian or bicycle. The student will learn to determine impact speed and direction of travel. Important considerations will be given to evidence collection. Course topics include:

  • Pedestrian and bicyclist behaviors                 
  • Interpretation of injury to vehicle contact
  • Post strike trajectories
  • Hit and run investigation
  • Time, distance and speed
  • Case study analysis
  • Practical exercises

 Prerequisites

 

​Basic traffic homicide at least.  It is strongly suggested the student have an aptitude towards mathematics and physics. There will be a pretest on the first day to assess prior knowledge. This test will not count toward the final grade.

Students must be active sworn law enforcement officers whose duties include crash investigation, or civilian employees of Florida law enforcement agencies who are crash investigators or crash investigation support personnel.

During training, the student is expected to attend the entire class. Absence due to medical, family or agency requirements must be approved by the instructor and made up on the students own time. The maximum time that may be made up is 10%. If more than 10% is missed, the student will be withdrawn from training.

 

 What Should I Bring?

 
​The student should bring their scientific calculator and traffic template with them to this class.
 

 What are the Expenses?

 
​Tuition for this training is provided through a grant, so there is no cost to you or your agency. Housing and meals are provided onsite at no cost when the training is offered onsite at the Florida Public Safety Institute and you will be traveling from out of town.
