Distance Learners and Disability Support Services

The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office provides accommodations for eligible students in the online environment, as well as on campus. Before receiving services, you must register with DSS and have a meeting with a DSS Counselor.

Disability Support Services works with the Center for Distance Learning to ensure that distance learning students receive the same quality of services and support as students on campus. Disability Support Services has many resources available for distance learning students.

Distance Learners and DSS FAQ

How can I request accommodations if I am not in town?
Distance learners are still able to receive accommodations that they are determined to be eligible for.  Complete the application for services on the DSS webpage, submit your documentation via mail, email, or fax, and call the office at 850-201-8430 to schedule a phone or a virtual appointment with a DSS advisor.
Can I use adaptive technology with online courses?
Yes! Blackboard is compatible with screen readers. All materials in the Virtual Learning Commons are created in accessible format. If you find a resource that you are not able to access, please call the DSS office at 850-201-8430 for assistance.
Who do I need to contact to arrange for testing accommodations?
Students can contact the TCC DSS Testing Center at 850-201-8271, to arrange for online accommodations to be set up. If an instructor does not provide online tests, but requires tests be taken in person, you can contact the same number to get information on setting up a proctor site near you.
I utilize audio books. Is there a way for me to continue this as a distance learner?
Yes! Make sure that you are registered member of Learning Ally . You will be able to request your books through this service. If a book that you need is not available at Learning Ally, please call the DSS office at 850-201-8430 so that arrangements can be made with the publisher to get an accessible format.

 Registering with DSS

  1. Please complete an application for services, which is available online.
  2. After your application has been submitted, you may fax , email, or deliver documentation of your disability to the office.
  3. When all forms are submitted, please contact the DSS office to schedule a phone conference, Skype meeting, or in-person conference to review your accommodations.

 Testing Center

Distance learners need to be aware of the test policies for each of their instructors. If you live outside of the Tri-County area (i.e., you do not live in Leon, Gadsden, or Wakulla counties), you may arrange for a test proctor closer to your area. This is a location that has been established to provide a secure testing environment. In order to locate an approved proctor site in your area, please contact the Distance Learning Testing Specialist at (850) 201-6440 or the main TCC Testing Center at (850) 201-8282. You may also visit the Proctored Testing web page for further information on setting up a proctor.

You are encouraged to schedule tests and exams well in advance of the test date, so that any accommodations can be arranged with the proctor site. In some cases, sites may request paperwork from the DSS office. In most cases, your accommodation form should be adequate to begin testing processes.

 Adaptive Tech

In many situations, extended time is the most common accommodation for distance learners. Distance learners are responsible for having required adaptive software (such as Dragon Naturally Speaking) on their home computer. Should you find material in your coursework that is not accessible, please contact the DSS office as quickly as possible by phone or email.
