New TCC Student & Continuing VA Benefits

Students who have used their VA educational benefits and are new to TCC will need to complete various forms to start their benefits, according to the chapter that qualifies them.

Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act

The Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act was signed into law on June 30, 2008 and took effect August 1, 2009. This new chapter provides up to 36 months of educational benefits for qualifying veterans up to 15 years following discharge or release from the last period of active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 33.   

Forms You Will Need for Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) Benefits

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.
NOTE : Please refer to the TCC Admissions page at www.GoToTCC.com for additional information.
  • Submit Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990). If you are on active duty, you need to have this form also signed by the Education Service Officer (ESO). If you received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA, this form is not needed.
  • Submit copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (members 4 copy)
  • Submit Copy of AARTS (Army), or SMARTS (Navy, Marine) or CCAF (Air Force), or request that Coast Guard transcript be sent to TCC Enrollment Service Office.
  • Submit a copy of your schedule to Veterans Affairs Office.

Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty

Called “MGIB” for short, this program provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

Requirements for Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill) Benefits

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.

  • Request for Change of Program or Place of Training Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1995). Veterans who have changed schools or programs will need to complete and submit this form. For veterans who received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA with the new changes, this form is not needed.
  • Copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (members 4 copy) if attending a new school
  • Copy of AARTS (Army), or SMARTS (Navy, Marine) or CCAF (Air Force), or request that Coast Guard transcript and/or other colleges or universities transcripts be sent to TCC Enrollment Service Office
  • Submit a copy of schedule to Veterans Affairs Office

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)

This program provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. The program is also commonly known as Chapter 35.

Requirements for Chapter 35 (DEA) Benefits

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.

  • Request for Change of Program or Place of Training Application for Survivors’ and Dependents” Education Assistance (VA Form 5495). A VA file number is required. For veterans who received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA with the new changes, this form is not needed.
  • Submit a copy of schedule to Veterans Affairs Office

Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)

This program may be available for members of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components. Veterans may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits. Benefit entitlement ends 14 years from the date of eligibility for the program, or on the day the person leaves the Selected Reserve. The program is also commonly known as Chapter 1606 or 1607 (Chapter 1607-reservists who serve on active duty on or after 9/11/01 for at least 90 days for a contingency operation).

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.
