New TCC Student & New to VA

Tallahassee Community College encourages and applications from veterans and military personnel. There are currently more than 450 student veterans receiving education benefits at TCC. Students who have never used their VA educational benefits and are new to TCC will need to complete various forms to start their benefits, according to the chapter that qualifies them.

Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act

The Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act was signed into law on June 30, 2008 and took effect August 1, 2009. This new chapter provides up to 36 months of educational benefits for qualifying veterans up to 15 years following discharge or release from the last period of active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 33.

Requirements for Chapter 33 Benefits (Post 9/11)

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.

  • Submit Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990). If on active duty, veterans must have this form signed by the Education Service Officer (ESO). For veterans who received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA, this form is not needed.
  • Submit copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (members 4 copy)
  • Submit copy of AARTS (Army), or SMARTS (Navy, Marine) or CCAF (Air Force), or request that Coast Guard transcript be sent to TCC Enrollment Service Office
  • Submit a copy of schedule to Veterans Affairs Office

Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty

Called “MGIB” for short, this program provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

Requirements for Chapter 30 Benefits (MGIB)

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.

  • Submit Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990). Veterans on active duty must have this form also signed by the Education Service Officer (ESO). For those who received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA, this form is not needed.
  • Submit copy of Marriage Certificate and VA Form 21-686c (for veterans who entered the service prior to 1/1/1977 and are claiming dependents. Veterans who have children under age 23, who are in college will need VA for 21-674)
  • Submit copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (members 4 copy)
  • Submit Copy of AARTS (Army), or SMARTS (Navy, Marine) or CCAF (Air Force), or request that Coast Guard transcript be sent to TCC Enrollment Service Office

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)

This program provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. The program is also commonly known as Chapter 35. 
 

Requirements for Chapter 35 Benefits (DEA)

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application.

  • Submit Application for Survivors’ and Dependents” Education Assistance (VA Form 5490). A VA file number is required. For veterans who received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA, this form is not needed.
  • Submit copy of birth certificate
  • Submit Copy of High School Diploma
  • Submit VA Letter showing 100% disability
  • Submit a copy of schedule to Veterans Affairs Office

Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)

This program may be available for members of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components. Veterans may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits. Benefit entitlement ends 14 years from the date of eligibility for the program, or on the day the person leaves the Selected Reserve. The program is also commonly known as Chapter 1606 or 1607 (Chapter 1607-reservists who serve on active duty on or after 9/11/01 for at least 90 days for a contingency operation).

Requirements for Chapter 1606 or 1607 Benefits (MGIB-SR)

  • Submit an application for admission to the Enrollment Services office. Applications for admission to TCC are available online or in the Enrollment Services office.
  • Submit an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED test scores to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Take the appropriate placement tests, if applicable.
  • Submit a complete Residency Affidavit as part of the College Application

  • Submit Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) (DD Form 2384-1)
  • Submit copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (members 4 copy)
  • Submit a copy of schedule to Veterans Affairs Office
  • Submit copy of AARTS (Army), or SMARTS (Navy, Marine) or CCAF (Air Force), or request that a Coast Guard transcript be sent to TCC Enrollment Service Office.
