Advanced and Specialized Training

Training at FPSI

FPSI provides advanced and specialized training s to enhance officers' skills and improve their knowledge. The institute is certified by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission to deliver all Commission-approved curricula to law enforcement, correctional, and correctional probation officers in Florida.

Types of Training

Specialized Training

  • These are courses recognized by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and may be funded using state trust fund monies.

Instructor Training

  • Successful completion of Instructor courses at a CJSTC-certified training school will qualify individuals to apply for certification as a CJSTC instructor in the subject areas of instruction.

Advanced Training

  • Advanced Training Courses are specific courses approved by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission for salary incentive payments to those who complete them.

Florida Certified Officers

Regions

The state is divided into regions for the purpose of providing training dollars to academies. State officers are Region 15 officers. Local officers in our area Region 3 officers (this includes State Attorney Circuit 2, college police agencies, and DCF State Hospital).

Funding

How a course is funded determines if it is available to only Florida-certified officers. For details on funding, please visit the course listing.

Mandatory Retraining Requirements

It is required in the statute that all full-time, part-time, or auxiliary officers shall successfully complete 40 hours of training every 4 years. That training may include in-service, advanced, specialized, or career development training courses. 

College credit courses may also be completed to meet mandatory retraining requirements.

The following topic areas must be addressed as part of the mandatory retraining requirement for each officer:

Human Diversity

There is no required number of hours for this training. Completion of Discriminatory Profiling and Professional Traffic Stops training may satisfy this training requirement at the discretion of the agency administrator.

Domestic Violence

There is no required number of hours for this training.

Juvenile Sexual Offender Investigations 

There is no required number of hours for this training.

Discriminatory Profiling and Professional Traffic Stops

There is no required number of hours for this training. However, completion of these trainings may satisfy the Human Diversity training requirement at the discretion of the agency administrator. 

Fees

If you are an individual paying for a course, all fees should be paid at least a week before the start of a class. Fees are payable in the Business Office. You can reach the Business Office at (850) 201-8525.

Accommodations

The Florida Public Safety Institute offers on-site single-occupancy housing.

Court Subpoenas

If you are subpoenaed for court or otherwise must miss class hours, you are allowed to miss 10% of the course without completing make-up work.

Agency Training

Prior to attending any advanced, specialized, or instructor course that CJSTC regulates, permission must be obtained from the officer's or support staff's agency. Officers should go through their training staff or other representatives from their agency to make contact with academy staff for region trust fund training.

Salary Incentive

Some of our courses require a Salary Incentive form that will need to be signed by your training manager and submitted to staff on the first day of the course.
