Tallahassee Community College recognized four new donations at the College's September 21 District Board of Trustees meeting at the main campus. The donations totaled $168, 403.
Among the donations are $10,000 from Florida Blue toward food insecurity at TCC. The funds will assist with purchasing food items and other goods to stock the College’s Talon’s Market, which is a free on-campus marketplace for students experiencing food insecurity.
Ken and Jean Boutwell contributed $75,000 to create scholarships for students engaged in TCC’s Black Male Achievers and Sister 2 Sister Programs. The Foundation will match these with Follett Book Credit Scholarships to ensure students have the books and supplies they need for their classes as well as laptops for those that need them. This is the second endowed scholarship that the Boutwells have created at TCC. The first was the Lamar & Pearl Youngblood Scholarship, created to honor the legacy of Jean’s parents.
Verizon donated $50,000 to support TCC’s R.I.S.E Institute or Resourcing Individuals for Success and Empowerment. The RISE Institute is a virtual camp that connects underprivileged, underrepresented middle school girls to a series of virtual, experiential learning, STEM-related activities designed to develop and cultivate collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving and entrepreneurship. The camp will include a coding and entrepreneurship curriculum with a capstone project at the end of the camp. In addition to the curriculum, the camp will serve as a platform for mentorship. TCC Scholars Program participants, students who are in their first year of college, will be paired with and mentor the RISE Institute students in the role as a “camp counselor.” This pairing will hopefully forge a relationship between the college students and the middle school students that could lead to future scholarship opportunities for the middle school students.
The Florida College System Foundation gifted $33,403. This donation will be dedicated to scholarships for first generation students and students studying in healthcare.
