More than 15 students graduated this summer from Tallahassee Community College’s GED program. This milestone was celebrated with a graduation ceremony on June 12 in TCC's Workforce Development Building. Three ESOL graduates were also recognized during this celebration.
The ceremony included an inspiring speech by student speaker Steveon Taylor and uplifting words by keynote speaker, City of Tallahassee Commissioner Jeremy Matlow.
The winner of the Dream Big Scholarship award was Shelonda Morgan. The scholarship is awarded to a new GED graduate who goes on to enroll in a college-credit program at TCC. It is sponsored by Richard and Karen Moore in honor of Karen’s mother, Pearl Lamb Batchelor, who had to drop out of school in the fifth grade to work in the tobacco fields to help support her family. Batchelor went back to school at age 72 to earn her GED diploma.
The GED program’s top academic students were valedictorian Farrah Blount and salutatorian Thi Nguyen. Honors recipients included Jose Cruz, Codey Harrington, Farrah Blount and Thi Nguyen.
