Spotlight of the Month: March: Women's History Month Much of women's history focuses on the recent past, since women have traditionally been afforded few of the rights that men take for granted. Women have had to fight for the right to own property, to be educated, to vote, and to work in their chosen career. It was not that long ago that there were no women architects, doctors, lawyers, astronauts, FBI agents, or soldiers in combat. Women's roles in sports and politics were also limited. Even today, women are paid an average of 76 cents for every dollar men earn, and they are still underrepresented in many professions. For example, in the newly convened 109th Congress, there are 79 women out of the 535 members of the House and Senate--14 senators and 65 House members. |
