Health Information and Informatics Management Programs
Health Information and Informatics Management (HIIM) is an allied health profession which plays a critical role in maintaining, collecting and analyzing data that is needed to deliver healthcare services and to make appropriate healthcare-related decisions. HIIM is the backbone of healthcare delivery. HIIM professionals can work in a multitude of roles and occupations in the healthcare field including hospitals, physician offices, clinics, long-term care facilities, government agencies, insurance companies and home health providers.
The HIIM field is moving away from paper to electronic systems which has caused the HIIM professionals' role to evolve. In preparation, students need to gain knowledge and competencies in regards to the principles, practices and technology of HIIM. It is the goal of the Health Information and Informatics Management program at TCC to provide that foundation. The certificates and degrees earned in this program will prepare students for employment in a variety of health care settings.
All courses in the two certificates are included in the Associate in Science degree. Students may choose to begin with either of the two certificates, or enter immediately into the degree program.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The HIT, A.S. program is in Candidacy Status, pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
CaHIIM accreditation will allow students to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam offered through AHIMA. This nationally recognized certification is often a requirement for employment in the industry. Students enrolled in the TCC AS degree in HIT while the program is in candidacy status will be eligible to sit for the exam once full accreditation has been attained.
