Firefighter Minimum Standards Program - Fall 2022

Course Description

This program is a 492-hour course and meets the requirements set forth by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Division of State Fire Marshal for certification as a firefighter. The Firefighter I & II Program is a physically and academically challenging course that includes extensive classroom and practical field components.

The program focuses on:

  • the chemistry, behavior and control of fire
  • fire service history
  • firefighter safety and health
  • fire department communications
  • building construction
  • tactical ventilation
  • fire streams
  • personal protective equipment
  • portable extinguishers
  • drills and exercises
  • ropes and knots
  • water supply
  • ladders, hose, sprinkler systems,
  • forcible entry, search, rescue and vehicle extrication
  • salvage and overhaul
  • fire prevention
  • fire origin and cause determination
  • loss control
  • first responder
  • fire alarms
  • Incident Management System
  • tactics and legal aspects
  • fire and life safety initiatives
  • hazardous materials identification and mitigation
  • wild land firefighting


Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must be of high moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor directly related to the position of firefighter. Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination.

Approximately $3300.00 (tuition, lab and uniforms) Subject to change per semester.

Fitness Level

Able to perform all physical activities related to areas of the curriculum, physical fitness conditioning and physical fitness testing.

Equipment Needs

Equipment is included in total cost.


Students are required to attend all sessions of any training course in which enrolled except for absences approved by the Fire Academy Coordinator.
