TCC Celebrates Women Building Community

Tallahassee Community College honored 10 community women in its annual Women’s History Month event on Wednesday evening, March 6. Each year during Women’s History Month, TCC recognizes and celebrates the contributions of women in the Big Bend community. 

 This year’s event theme was Women Building Community and featured keynote speaker, Lynn Hatter, an award-winning reporter and producer, and current news director for WFSU. TCC’s award-winning Forensics Team performed a reading of “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. Ava Daly read her poem “Notes on Curves” from the upcoming edition of Eyrie, the College’s literary and art magazine.

Community honorees are: 

  • Rita Brown, Founder/CEO of Brownsville Preparatory Institute
  • Jocelyne Fliger President and CEO of Elder Care Services Inc.
  • Adela Ghadimi, Organizing specialist and service unit director for United Faculty of Florida (UFF)
  • Frances Knight, Former Florida A&M University coach and physical education instructor
  • Chika Okoro, Peer Review Coordinator for the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants
  • Kay Pelt-Walker, Volunteer services coordinator for Leon County Government’s Office of Citizen Engagement
  • Vanessa Rowse, Executive Director at The Village Square
  • Valencia Scott, Deputy director of administrative services at the Leon County Property Appraiser’s Office
  • Ernestine Sweeting, Founder of the Restoration and Refuge Outreach Center and the Universal Christian Tabernacle Church of Jesus Christ Inc. 
  • Juanita Williams, Former Tallahassee Community College professor and meal sponsor for the Hope Community
