TCC's Insurance

The Risk Management Office manages the College's insurance programs in conjunction with the Florida College Risk Management Consortium (FCSRMC). We focus on providing guidance and education to departments on risk management and insurance requirements.

With a goal to minimize the adverse effects of unpredictable events, other Risk Management duties include:

  • Organizing and maintaining a database on incidents, accidents and other loss-related events that impact or potentially impact College resources.
  • Reviewing insurance language in vendor and supplier contracts to control transfer of risk in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Reviewing supplier Certificates of Insurance for those performing work on College properties.
  • Maintaining current values for buildings, contents, and other College property.
  • Responding to all property, liability and other casualty losses, initiating investigations and accomplishing the appropriate resolution of all claims.
  • Requesting Certificates of Insurance for the College as requested from external entities.
  • Evaluating the College's program for disaster preparedness and business continuity in support of our Campus Police Department.

Allied Health & Teacher Education Degree & Certificate Students

The intent of Allied Health Professional Liability Student Insurance is to provide coverage for any acts or omissions by Tallahassee Community College students in the context of furnishing professional healthcare services in other programs, such as teacher education, as designated by the College.

Coverage provided through this liability insurance certificate protects students from claims made against them by a third party for bodily injury or property damage resulting from the student's clinical practice.

Allied Health Student Insurance provides professional liability (malpractice) coverage for allied health students pursuing a degree or certificate in a healthcare profession that leads to licensure or certification to provide some dorm of health care to the public.

Who is Covered

Students enrolled in allied health courses and other programs designated by the College, such as teacher education at TCC, are named insureds under the policy, but only while students participate in activities that are a part of and a requirement of their curriculum at the College. The policy is a blanket policy for those enrolled in a program of study leading to a degree or certificate in a healthcare profession (nursing, physical therapist assistant, etc.) and other programs as designated by the College, such as teacher education. It covers all coursework as long as the curriculum requires it.

In addition, faculty members who teach in these programs are covered, but only with respect to claims arising out of their supervision and instruction of students in these programs. Please Note: Faculty coverage is limited to the supervision and instruction of students only. The policy does not provide coverage for a faculty member's malpractice.

Allied Health Continuing Education Students

The intent of Allied Health Professional Liability Student Insurance is to provide coverage for any acts or omissions by Tallahassee Community College students in the context of furnishing professional healthcare services and in other programs, such as teacher education, as designated by the College.

Coverage provided through this liability insurance certificate protects students from claims made against them by a third party for bodily injury or property damage resulting from the student's clinical practice.

Continuing Education Allied Health Student Insurance provides professional liability (malpractice) coverage for students in continuing education programs. These courses may be taken to enhance a student's current professional status or to brush up on skills in preparation for the State board exam.

Who is Covered

Students enrolled in allied health continuing education courses at the College are named insureds. The policy is a blanket policy for those who have already completed a basic program of study and are returning for refresher courses (usually single-term enrollment).

Continuing education coverage is over any other valid and collectible insurance or coverage provided by the student or the student's employer.

In addition, faculty members who teach in these programs are covered, but only with respect to claims arising out of their supervision and instruction of students in these programs. Please Note: Faculty coverage is limited to the supervision and instruction of students only. The policy does not provide coverage for faculty member's malpractice.

Student Athlete Coverage

Our policy covers student-athletes, student managers, student trainers, student coaches, and student cheerleaders or bodily injuries sustained while participating in athletics competitions that are authorized, sanctioned, or scheduled by TCC for approved sporting programs. This includes College-supervised practices, game-related activities, off-season conditioning, and related, covered travel.

Claims are paid on a secondary basis after any primary medical insurance has made payment. If the student-athlete does not have his or her own medical insurance, the policy will be paid on a primary basis.

Please Note: Student athletes participating in athletics at TCC are covered under a secondary policy, which pays the remaining portions of the medical bills after the student athlete's primary insurance carrier has made payment. Student-athletes with primary insurance coverage are expected to seek and receive treatment only from in-network providers authorized by their primary insurance carrier. Any exceptions must be approved in advance of treatment by the Athletic Director.

In addition, student-athletes with primary insurance must inform the Athletic Training Staff of any changes in their primary insurance status when it occurs. Failure to report any change in primary insurance coverage could result in non-payment and/or personal financial responsibility for treating any injuries while representing TCC as a student-athlete. If a student-athlete does not have primary insurance coverage, then the secondary policy will act as primary insurance for injuries sustained while participating in athletics at TCC.

Refer to the Claims Process page for steps in completing a claim.

Education/Training Coverage

The Education/Training Student Accident Insurance program is a fully insured policy underwritten by QBE Insurance Group (QBE). This certificate of insurance provides coverage for registered students in the named education/training courses on file with QBE while the students are:

  • Participating in College courses, labs, or clinical training activities that are sponsored by TCC and on the premises designated and supervised by the College.
  • On the premises used for classes, labs, or clinical training as designated by the College.
  • Traveling with a group in connection with these activities under the direct supervision of the College.

Coverage under this policy ends when the applicable course or program of study ends. The policy does not provide coverage for returning students who wish to take agility tests, recertification exams, etc., unless said students are enrolled in a course.

Student accident insurance covers the student for injuries they incur while participating in their covered curriculum. The covered curriculums can include those outside of the allied health arena.

Please Note: The policy provides excess coverage. Any other coverage available to a student would be primary.

Students are responsible for submitting all related medical bills resulting from an injury and any other supporting documentation.

Example of a Claim: A student suffers a laceration requiring medical attention while participating in a clinical experience as part of his or her education or training coursework.
