African Drum and Dance Ensemble

About the Ensemble

The TCC African Drum and Dance Ensemble was founded in January of 2006 with the mission of learning and exploring the music, dance, and culture of Sub-Saharan Africa and the African Diaspora, and sharing that culture with the TCC community, Tallahassee, and the world at large. TCC African Drum and Dance Ensemble performs extensively on TCC campus as well as in collaboration with organizations at FSU and FAMU, and at community events all over Tallahassee and the surrounding areas.

The ensemble is directed by Dr. Sara Brown and Kermit Harrison, with Bianca Hargrett and Sunshine Scott serving as artistic directors. The group’s repertoire includes music and dance from Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Brazil, the Caribbean, and The United States. The ensemble sings, dances, and plays the djembe, dundun, bells, shekere, kalimba, kidi, kaganu, amadinda, akogo, ngoma, kalimba, and a host of other instruments.

Since the ensemble's humble beginnings with 10 members, the group has grown to an organization with a credit course component (MUN 2830) with 15 registered students. In addition, students, alumni, and community members volunteer to participate in the performing ensemble and rehearse with us every week. Members of the ensemble vary in experience from those who began at the start of this semester to seasoned musicians and dancers with over 20 years of performance experience.
